September 20: Join the USPTO, ITA, and NIST for a public listening session on standards and intellectual property

Event at USPTO headquarters seeks stakeholder feedback on newly published Federal Register Notice

On Wednesday, September 20 at 1 p.m. ET, the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO), along with the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) and the International Trade Administration (ITA), will hold a public listening session focused on issues at the intersection of standards and intellectual property.

The listening session will seek stakeholder input on questions regarding current international standards posed in a new Federal Register Notice (FRN), “Joint ITA-NIST-USPTO Collaboration Initiative Regarding Standards.” The feedback we receive will help us implement the United States Government National Standards Strategy for Critical and Emerging Technology that was issued by the White House in May 2023.

“By working closely with the Department of Commerce, NIST, and ITA, we are ensuring that the technology standards that Americans rely on daily are safe and reliable and will protect U.S. innovation and competitiveness in the future,” said Under Secretary of Commerce for Intellectual Property and Director of the USPTO Kathi Vidal. “We look forward to hearing from the public on this important topic.”

This in-person and online event will take place at the Clara Barton Auditorium in USPTO headquarters at 600 Dulany Street, Alexandria, Virginia. To learn more and to register, visit the USPTO website.

The FRN will officially publish in the Federal Register on Monday, September 11.
