Learn the fundamentals of the patent application process

Do you have an invention you want to patent? Are you unfamiliar with the patent filing process? Are you a first-time patent application filer? Are you unsure where to begin?

If so, attend the United States Patent and Trademark Office's Stakeholders Application Readiness Training (StART) program's free, virtual workshop on January 23-25, 2024.

The three-day StART workshop, held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. ET each day, will cover the fundamentals of the patent application process. Independent inventors and entrepreneurs will receive training and one-on-one assistance in preparing and filing patent applications.

To attend, complete and submit the required interest form. To get the most out of this workshop, selectees must fulfill these prerequisites before attending the workshop:

  • Complete the Intellectual Property (IP) Awareness Survey to identify the type of patent that best fits your IP needs
  • Submit a written description and drawings of your invention to maximize your learning experience.
  • Obtain a USPTO customer number to track your application
  • Create a verified MyUSPTO.gov account to gain access to better monitoring, tracking, and responses from the USPTO throughout your application process

For help with obtaining a customer number and creating a verified MyUSPTO.gov account, visit the Patent Electronic Business Center page. Send your questions, feedback, and requests for a reasonable accommodation to SETD@uspto.gov. Captioning service will be provided.
