For small businesses participating in the federal government’s Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) or Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) programs, understanding intellectual property (IP)—including patents, trade secrets, trademarks, and copyrights—is necessary to protect your ideas, products, and product names in today’s knowledge economy.
This series of webinars, organized by the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) and the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA)’s Office of Investment and Innovation, has been designed to specifically address the most common IP issues facing small businesses implementing SBIR and STTR Phase 1 and Phase 2 funding. Expansion programming for businesses new to IP or new to the SBIR/STTR programs is also available. Each event concludes with a question-and-answer period where you can ask our SBA and USPTO experts questions.
This program is presented by the USPTO’s Global Intellectual Property Academy, a unit of the USPTO’s Office of Policy and International Affairs (OPIA). The office advises the administration and other federal government departments and agencies on domestic and international IP legal and policy issues. It also provides technical assistance and training on IP-related matters to U.S. stakeholders and both U.S. and foreign government officials.
The SBA’s Office of Investment and Innovation (OII) leads America’s Seed Fund, which is the largest source of non-dilutive capital available to high-tech small businesses. America’s Seed Fund includes the SBIR/STTR programs which are geared towards helping startups and small businesses transform their high-risk, high-impact technologies into marketable products, and services that solve problems of societal importance.
