Daniel Ryman currently serves as an acting Deputy Commissioner for Patents. In this role, Mr. Ryman provides executive oversight for the divisions in the Office of International Patent Cooperation, which lead Patents’ efforts related to international IP cooperation, harmonization, and outreach, and Technology Centers (TCs) 2600 and 3700, which respectively handle the examination of patent applications related to the technologies of communication and the technologies of mechanical engineering, manufacturing, and medical devices and processes. Prior to this acting role, Mr. Ryman served as an Assistant Commissioner for Patents, where he provided executive leadership to quality-related offices in charge of training, statistics, process improvement, and stakeholder outreach as well as TCs 1600 and 3600, which respectively handle the examination of patent applications related to the technologies of biotechnology and organic chemistry and the technologies of transportation, construction, agriculture, electronic commerce, and national security.
Previously, Mr. Ryman has served as an Associate Commissioner for Patent Quality, Director of the Office of Patent Quality Assurance, senior advisor to the Under Secretary and Director of the USPTO, senior advisor to the Deputy Commissioner for Patent Quality, and supervisor in both the USPTO’s Central Reexamination Unit and Technology Center 2400. Mr. Ryman started his USPTO career as a patent examiner focused on applications related to multiplex communication.
Mr. Ryman has a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from the Colorado School of Mines and a law degree from the George Washington University Law School.
