Andrew Wang

Acting Deputy Commissioner for Patents

Andrew (Drew) Wang currently serves as an acting Deputy Commissioner for Patents, providing executive oversight of the Office of Information Technology for Patents (OITP) and the Office of Application Processing for Patents (OAPP). In this role he is the focal point for patents information technology initiatives and for application filing, processing, and publication activities. 

Previously, Mr. Wang served as Assistant Commissioner for Patents beginning in October 2020, overseeing Technology Centers 1700 and 2800 and directing examination programs in chemical and materials engineering, semiconductors and memory, optics, electrical circuits and systems, and printing/measuring/testing, while also providing operational oversight for OITP, OAPP and the Office of Application Processing and Systems Administration (OAPSA). He began his USPTO career in 1996 as an examiner in Technology Center 1600 focused on recombinant technologies, was promoted to Supervisory Patent Examiner in 2002 and managed multiple art units across Technology Centers 1600 and 2600, and was appointed to the Senior Executive Service in 2012 to serve as Director overseeing Technology Center 3700 operations. He also served as group director for Technology Center 1600, managing patent operations in recombinant nucleic acid technologies and bio-affecting organic chemistries. 

Mr. Wang holds a Bachelor’s of Science and a Master’s of Science in Molecular Biology from Temple University in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
