Stephanie Kwolek invented poly-paraphenylene terephtalamide, a polymer material that is 5 times stronger than steel on an equal weight basis. The materials, marketed under the Kevlar® brand, have many applications ranging from bicycle tires and racing sails to vests used by police and military personnel.
