Learn how to apply for a patent

Do you have an invention you want to patent? Are you a first-time patent application filer? Are you unfamiliar with the patent filing process? Get a head StART with a free, three-day United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO)-sponsored virtual workshop on the fundamentals of the patent application process.

The USPTO’s Stakeholders Application Readiness Training (StART) program will be held from Tuesday, March 19, through Thursday, March 21, and will cover the fundamentals of the patent application process. Independent inventors and entrepreneurs will receive training and one-on-one assistance in preparing and filing patent applications.

So you get the most out of the workshop if you are selected to attend, you must complete these course prerequisites beforehand:

  • The Intellectual Property (IP) Awareness Survey to identify the type of patent that best fits your IP needs
  • A written description and drawing(s) of your invention
  • A USPTO customer number to track your application
  • Creation of a verified MyUSPTO.gov account to gain access to better monitoring, tracking, and responses from the USPTO throughout the application process

For assistance with obtaining a customer number and setting up a verified MyUSPTO.gov account, contact the Patent Electronic Business Center

Capacity is limited. If you would like to attend, complete the required interest form as soon as possible. For more information, to give feedback, or to request a reasonable accommodation, contact SETD@uspto.gov. Captioning service will be provided.
