December 02, 1998
Press Release, 98-24
Bruce A. Lehman, assistant secretary of commerce and commissioner of patents and trademarks yesterday sent his letter of resignation to President Clinton effective December 31, 1998. Lehman had announced in late October that he would be leaving his post at the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (PTO) by year's end.
In his letter, Commissioner Lehman outlined some of the accomplishments of his nearly six-year tenure at the PTO and thanked the president for the opportunity to serve his country, and for the opportunity to make history as the first openly gay man appointed to a sub-Cabinet position.
