1. A method in a base station of an evolved UMTS Terrestrial Radio Access Network, E-UTRAN, operating in time divisional duplex, TDD, mode for transmitting data on a radio channel, the method comprising:
jointly encoding a preamble format with a first random access configuration, forming an extended random access configuration, wherein the first random access configuration comprises a combination of:
a density value defining a density of random access opportunities on a Physical Random Access Channel, PRACH; and
a version index defining one of several possible patterns of opportunities on the PRACH for that density, each pattern allocating opportunities to different sub-frames of the PRACH; and
transmitting the extended random access configuration on the radio channel.
