1. A battery comprising:
a cathode;
an anode; and
an electrolyte;
wherein the cathode comprises a cathode material, the cathode material comprising a cathode active material which is configured to reversibly intercalate-deintercalate a plurality of first metal ions;
wherein the electrolyte comprises at least a solvent configured to dissolve a solute, the solute being ionized to a plurality of second metal ions that can be reduced to a metallic state during a charge cycle and be oxidized from the metallic state to the plurality of second metal ions during a discharge cycle, and the first plurality of metal ions are configured to deintercalate from the cathode active material during the charge cycle and intercalate into the cathode active material during the discharge cycle; and
wherein at least one of the anode and the electrolyte further comprise an additive which comprises a bismuth compound.
