1. A method for identifying bone marrow in medical images, the method comprising:
acquiring a three-dimensional (3D) image from a computed tomography (CT) imaging system;
applying a bone threshold value to the 3D image to provide a threshold 3D image that identifies bone regions in the 3D image, the bone regions identified by one or more processors;
filling non-bone regions in the threshold 3D image to provide a filled threshold 3D image by region growing from boundaries defined by the identified bone regions, wherein the region growing is performed only to voxels completely encapsulated within the boundaries determined from the identified bone regions;
subtracting the 3D image from the filled threshold 3D image to provide a resultant 3D image to identify bone marrow regions in the 3D image as filled regions other than the identified bone regions; and
overlaying the resultant 3D image on the 3D image.
