1. A belt device comprising:
an endless rotatable belt;
a scale tape having a first end and a second end and including a scale pattern, the scale tape bonded on the belt;
an optical sensor to detect the scale pattern; and
an auxiliary tape to cover at least one of the first end and the second end of the scale tape on the belt,
the auxiliary tape having a lower surface friction coefficient than a surface friction coefficient of the scale tape.
