A liquid crystal display device comprising a first substrate, a second substrate, a liquid crystal composition layer sandwiched between the first substrate and the second substrate, a color filter constituted by a black matrix and at least RGB three-color pixel portions, a pixel electrode, and a common electrode,
wherein the liquid crystal composition layer contains a liquid crystal composition that contains one or more compounds represented by general formula (I),

in the formulae, R21 to R30 each independently represent an alkyl group having 1 to 10 carbon atoms, an alkoxy group having 1 to 10 carbon atoms, or an alkenyl group having 2 to 10 carbon atoms; and X21 represents a hydrogen atom or a fluorine atom,
the color filter is a color filter containing an organic pigment, and
in the color filter, a volume fraction of particles having a particle size of more than 1000 nm relative to all particles of the organic pigment is 1% or less, and a volume fraction of particles having a particle size of 40 nm or more and 1000 nm or less relative to all particles of the organic pigment is 25% or less.
