1. A method of identifying an article of manufacture, the method comprising:
(a) providing an article comprising a plurality of first serialized oligonucleotide-nanoparticles, each first serialized oligonucleotide-nanoparticle comprising (i) a first nanoparticle core comprising a metal and (ii) at least one first serialized oligonucleotide attached thereto, wherein the first serialized oligonucleotide has an oligonucleotide base sequence corresponding to a unique preselected code defining one or more identifying indicia of the article, and the plurality of first serialized oligonucleotide-nanoparticles comprises a plurality of different metals in a preselected ratio corresponding to an additional preselected code defining one or more additional identifying indicia of the article;
(b) providing a second serialized oligonucleotide-nanoparticle comprising a second nanoparticle core and at least one second serialized oligonucleotide attached thereto, wherein the second serialized oligonucleotide has an oligonucleotide base sequence at least partially complementary to the first serialized oligonucleotide and capable of hybridizing thereto;
(c) combining (i) at least one of the article and a sample thereof containing the first serialized oligonucleotide-nanoparticle and (ii) the second serialized oligonucleotide-nanoparticle under conditions sufficient for hybridization between the first serialized oligonucleotide and the second serialized oligonucleotide, thereby forming a nanoparticle complex comprising the first nanoparticle core attached to the second nanoparticle core via the hybridized first and second serialized oligonucleotides;
(d) separating the nanoparticle complex from the article or the sample components remaining after nanoparticle complex formation, thereby forming a purified nanoparticle complex; and
(e) electrochemically detecting the at least one of the first nanoparticle core and the second nanoparticle core in the purified nanoparticle complex, thereby determining at least one of the identifying indicia corresponding to the preselected code of the first serialized oligonucleotide.
