1. A method for performance of a percutaneous angioplasty or stent placement procedure in a subject with concurrent cardiopulmonary support, said method comprising the steps of:
a) obtaining an extracorporeal cardiopulmonary support device which comprises a venous blood inlet, a blood pump, a blood reservoir which receives blood from the venous blood inlet, an air extraction pump associated with the blood reservoir, a blood oxygenator which receives and oxygenates blood from the blood reservoir, an oxygenated blood outlet through which oxygenated blood flows from the blood oxygenator, a filter for filtering oxygenated blood flowing through the oxygenated blood outlet, a bubble detector for detecting the presence of bubbles in oxygenated blood flowing through the oxygenated blood outlet, a quick acting clamp located on the oxygenated blood outlet downstream of the bubble detector and control circuitry adapted to perform priming of the device, when initiated, in an automated manner without human intervention, and to thereafter control operation of the cardiopulmonary support device without the need for a perfusionist;
b) initiating the priming, thereby causing the device to become primed in said automated manner without human intervention;
c) positioning a venous cannula in a vein of the subject and an arterial cannula in an artery of the subject;
d) connecting the venous cannula to the venous blood inlet of the extracorporeal cardiopulmonary support device and connecting the arterial cannula to the oxygenated blood outlet of the extracorporeal cardiopulmonary support device;
e) positioning a balloon catheter having an inflatable balloon in the vasculature of the subject and inflating the balloon to effect an angioplasty or stent placement; and
f) if, upon inflation of the balloon, a complication selected from rupture of a blood vessel, cardiopulmonary arrest or cardiopulmonary insufficiency occurs, causing the extracorporeal cardiopulmonary support device to operate, without a perfusionist, such that the blood pump pumps venous blood from the patient's venous vasculature, through the venous cannula, through the venous blood inlet, into the reservoir and from the reservoir to the oxygenator wherein the venous blood becomes oxygenated, and thereafter pumps the oxygenated blood from the oxygenator, through the oxygenated blood outlet, through the arterial cannula and into the patient's arterial vasculature;
wherein the priming is completed before the inflation of the balloon such that extracorporeal cardiopulmonary support device is primed and ready for use at the time the balloon is inflated.
