Legal Analysis for the Proposed Examination
Guidelines for Computer-Implemented inventions

The Patent and Trademark Office announces the availability of the legal analysis for the proposed examination guidelines for computer-implemented inventions. The legal analysis has three parts, namely, the analysis, an appendix providing the proposed examination guidelines, and a flowchart outlining the examination procedure established by the guidelines. Files corresponding to each portion of the analysis, or combinations thereof, are available as follows:

Paper copies of the legal analysis can be obtained by faxing a request to Jeff Kushan at (703) 305-8885. Please provide a mailing address on your request; we will not be faxing copies of the legal analysis due to its length.

Interested parties are invited to comment on the proposed examination guidelines and the legal analysis. The PTO will accept public comments until November 13, 1995. Comments should be sent to the attention of Karen Buchanan of the Office of the Solicitor, and may be provided by mail, by fax or by electronic mail. Comments submitted by mail should be sent to Commissioner of Patents and Trademarks, Box 8, Patent and Trademark Office, Washington, DC 20231. Comments may also be submitted by telefax at (703) 305-9373 and by electronic mail through the Internet to "comments-software@uspto.gov." Written comments should include the following information:

Parties presenting written comments who wish to have their comments included in a publicly accessible electronic database of comments must provide their comments in machine-readable format. Such submissions may be provided in the form of an electronic mail message sent through the Internet, or on a 3.5" floppy disk formatted for use in either a Macintosh or MS-DOS based computer. Machine-readable submissions must be provided as unformatted text (e.g., ASCII or plain text).
