Inventors who serve
Generations of American military members have used their talents to innovate on the battlefield and in their communities.
In 2025, three branches of the United States military — the Army, Navy, and Marine Corps — will celebrate their respective 250th anniversaries. To honor these momentous events, we invite you to read our collection of stories about Inventors who serve. This Journeys of Innovation series highlights service members who used their military experiences to advance our society through inventions and patents.
Some of the stories will bring you into the time period of a Civil War veteran who redesigned and patented the Medal of Honor; a World War II Navy radio technician who turned ideas formed while serving on the USS Batfish into some of the most iconic toys of the 20th century; and a Marine Corps officer who patented an invention to address the world’s largest unmet disability.
Read the stories now.
Each month, our Journeys of Innovation series tells the stories of inventors or entrepreneurs who have made a positive difference in the world.
