Patent Trial and Appeal Board

USPTO launches Education Clinic staffed by former PTAB judges to answer questions about PTAB proceedings

The USPTO is launching a free new initiative to help guide and educate members of the public—from independent inventors to small businesses to large corporations and more—on Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB) proceedings.

Volunteers are available to meet with you one-on-one at no cost to answer questions about ex parte appeals and America Invents Act (AIA) proceedings.

Former PTAB judges who are members of the Association of American Patent Judges will answer questions and help provide guidance on PTAB proceedings, including examiner rejections of patent applications (called “ex parte appeals”) and PTAB reviews of challenges to issued patent claims (called “AIA proceedings”). If you’ve received a final rejection of your patent application and are thinking of filing an appeal to the PTAB, someone has challenged claims in your issued patent, or you are considering challenging claims in an issued patent, this Education Clinic is for you.

The PTAB Education Clinic is free to the public, but you must submit an appointment request. After submitting the form, you'll receive an email regarding your appointment request.

The first clinic will be held on Thursday, September 12, from 4 to 5 p.m. ET with four appointment slots available that day. More clinics are set for October 10, November 14, and December 12.
