Jogbra inventors

Hinda Miller, Polly Smith, and Lisa Lindahl designed the sports bra in the 1970s to decrease discomfort for female runners. Since then, their invention has become a necessity for female athletes and a modern fashion staple. The empowering story of these three women offers a compelling example of determination, ingenuity, and creativity. 

Establishing the new fit

In 1979, Lisa Lindahl, Hinda Miller, and Polly Smith received U.S. Patent No. 4,174,717 for the athletic brassiere, or “Jogbra.” More than 40 years after their invention, they gathered in the National Inventors Hall of Fame Museum in Alexandria, Va. to discuss their experiences as pioneers in the women’s fitness industry and to reminisce about their days as young friends and creators.

The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) today announced the launch of the Community Outreach Campaign: Intellectual Property (IP) Champions. This program connects our USPTO employees (our designated "IP Champions")—trained in providing IP awareness and educational resources to diverse audiences—with high schools and local community centers.

USPTO’s new Diversity Information Platform: Advancing innovation through data-driven action

The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) recently launched a Diversity Information Platform (DI Platform) to advance diversity and inclusion efforts throughout the innovation ecosystem by providing a no-cost tool for data-driven analyses and a one-stop shop for discussing and sharing best practices. The unique online platform is free and available to anyone with an internet connection.

U.S. Patent and Trademark Office and U.S. Copyright Office conclude joint study on non-fungible tokens

The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office and the U.S. Copyright Office (collectively the “Offices”) published the results of their joint study on the intellectual property (IP) law and policy implications of non-fungible tokens (NFTs). The Offices conducted the study in response to a June 2022 request from then-Chair of the Senate Committee on the Judiciary Subcommittee on Intellectual Property Patrick Leahy and Ranking Member Thom Tillis.

A group of patent examiners from the Thermal & Combustion Technology, Data Processing, Vehicles, Navigation area was in California during a USPTO Site Experience Education (SEE) program visit last week to enhance their technical expertise in new and evolving technologies with autonomous vehicles.
