Eddie Goldfarb

A natural optimist, toy inventor Eddy Goldfarb overcame early loss, financial hardships, and professional setbacks to become an independent inventor who created some of the most popular mechanical toys of the 20th century. Now a centenarian with nearly 300 patents to his name, Goldfarb credits his longevity to his love of tinkering and writing.

A legacy of love, loyalty, and laughter

It’s 1944, and the world is at war. Thousands of miles from home in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, 23-year-old Eddy Goldfarb sits hunched over in the cramped radio room of the USS Batfish, sketching diagrams and jotting down descriptions in a small notebook under the incandescent light of a 40-watt bulb. It is in this room — the size of two telephone booths — that Goldfarb can temporarily escape the noise and chaos of the war that rages in the water and skies above him.

The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) today announced that it will open a new regional office in the Atlanta, Georgia metropolitan area serving innovators in the Southeast region, and a new community outreach office in Strafford County, New Hampshire, serving innovators in the New England region.

One of Eddy Goldfarb’s most iconic creations – the bubble gun – almost never came to be. Rejected by every major toy company at the time due to cost concerns, Goldfarb turned to a former business associate and budding serial entrepreneur who took a chance on investing in Goldfarb’s bubble gun.

Advances in digital technology raise new questions and allow for new opportunities. Last week, USPTO Director Kathi Vidal joined the U.S. Copyright Office and other heads of the G7 intellectual property (IP) offices for a meeting - in the metaverse! Leaders reported on their work to expand access to the IP ecosystem and protect IP rights in new digital contexts, including commerce in non-tangible goods and the very digital environment where the meeting occurred.
