National Summer Teacher Institute opens doors to discovery

"When you add invention to the mix, it brings something unique for students. If you're interested in developing students into inventors, engineers, or scientists, what you learn at NSTI will help with that."

Former high school coach-turned-engineering and robotics teacher Doug Scott attended the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office's (USPTO) National Summer Teacher Institute (NSTI) because he wanted to support a group of his students who were working on a patent application. After his NSTI experience, he has the tools to guide his students through the engineering process from start to finish: his students see a problem, identify solutions, and research existing patents on their way to deciding what they will invent. In 2016, his Lemelson-MIT InvenTeam received U.S. Patent No. 9,511,833 for their ice search and rescue vehicle.

Apply today to experience NSTI for yourself July 21-26 at USPTO headquarters in Alexandria, Virginia: this free, unique professional development experience provides the tools you need to unlock the power of invention education, intellectual property (IP), and STEM, and give your students the skills, mindset, and confidence they need to reach their potential.

Applications are due March 31. If you have questions regarding National Summer Teacher Institute, contact NSTI_Applications@uspto.gov.
