Name, Image, Likeness for student-athletes

Kate Fitzgerald, a senior on the Arizona State University (ASU) women’s beach volleyball team, wanted to start her own business when she noticed a lack of volleyball-themed apparel in her university’s bookstore. When the rules around name, image, and likeness (NIL) were updated in 2021 to support student-athletes like her, she took action and licensed her apparel with ASU. The clothing sold out, and she even started to see fans dressed in her designs at her games. Fitzgerald truly finds joy in inspiring other young entrepreneurs to follow their dreams.

Hear more about her experiences during a fireside chat with the USPTO’s Deputy Director Derrick Brent at our Name, Image, Likeness for student-athletes event on Thursday, October 10.

This event will take place virtually and in person at ASU’s Sandra Day O'Connor College of Law from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. PT. Afterward, in-person attendees can attend a networking opportunity from 3-5 p.m. PT.
