A district of determination

Inventors James Wormley, Miriam Benjamin, and Robert Pelham had a great deal in common. They were all determined individuals who saw a problem and, using their ingenuity and skills, sought a solution. For a time, they were all part of an emerging middle class of African American entrepreneurs, professionals, and civil servants living in the nation’s capital. And they all appeared on Henry Baker’s list of Black patent holders, a list that became evidence for a growing civil rights movement.
