Two accidents brought inventor Garrett Morgan into the national spotlight, but it was his determination, resourcefulness, and dedication to public service that made him a success. By patenting and marketing his smoke hood and traffic signal, Morgan saved lives. Throughout his career, he found innovative ways to make his community a better place for all. |

Of courage and caution
Born to Sidney and Eliza Morgan around 1877, Garrett Morgan grew up in the hamlet of Paris, Kentucky. One of several children in a rural community, Morgan’s early life did not afford many opportunities for formal education. With only six years of schooling, he moved across the Ohio River to Cincinnati at the age of 14. With a portion of his wages, he hired a tutor and continued his education.

Improving our service to America’s innovators
As we announced in September, as part of our modernization efforts to provide more extensible technology and functionality, the EFS-Web and Private Patent Application Information Retrieval (Private PAIR) tools are being retired after their decades of use as electronic filing and application management systems for our Patents customers.

To provide a modernized search experience that can adapt to the needs of the trademark community, the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) will be launching our cloud-based trademark search system on Thursday, November 30.

Patent Center fully replaces USPTO legacy systems for filing and managing patent applications online
As recently announced as part of our modernization efforts to provide our customers with more efficient and effective IT tools, today we are officially retiring the decades-old EFS-Web and Private Patent Application Information Retrieval (Private PAIR). The Patent Center system will fully replace these legacy tools, providing a one-stop shop for our patents customers for filing and managing their applications, offering a next-generation user interface with better overall system performance and security.

More than 200 responses received to Request for Comments on new outreach offices and services under Unleashing American Innovators Act
A summary of responses received to a June 2023 Request for Comments (RFC) seeking public input on the establishment of a Southeast Regional Office (SERO) and Northern New England Community Outreach Office (NNECOO) is now available. The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) received 208 total responses on potential office locations, as well as what services these offices should provide and what collaborations they should build with other agencies and organizations.
