Single mother Bette Nesmith Graham struggled to financially support her son on her meager secretarial salary while trying to overcome a technological learning curve that could very well have cost Nesmith Graham her job. Through ingenuity and perseverance, this high school dropout became a business magnate.

Perseverance, thy name is Bette

She stood outside the Texas Bank and Trust high-rise building in downtown Dallas one mild southern winter day, watching brush stroke after brush stroke as the artists slowly transformed the bank’s exterior windows into a painted festive scene for the upcoming Christmas holidays. Mesmerized, she observed the artists layer different colors of paint on the windows, erasing misplaced brush strokes in an instant.

The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) published its 2022-2026 Strategic Plan, completing a planning process that welcomed more than 150 comments on the draft version from the public and USPTO employees. 

Our plan for the future

It’s been a work in progress for many months, and today, I’m excited to announce the publication of our 2022-2026 Strategic Plan. We gathered extensive comments from our employees, public advisory committees, IP industry groups, and the public to help shape this document into a clear and consistent plan. I’m grateful to everyone who provided feedback throughout the planning process to make this plan ambitious, focused, and relevant.

Patenting innovation in climate science

Parikha Mehta has spent the last four months focused on the intersection of intellectual property and climate and environmental technologies while on an employee exchange (known as a detail) at NOAA from the U.S Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO). Her goal: Help researchers understand the importance of protecting their inventions so that NOAA’s research and technology can better serve the public and inspire future innovation.

USPTO takes first steps to open Southeast Regional Office and new community outreach offices; seeks public feedback via new request for comments

WASHINGTON—The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) today announced a request for comments (RFC) seeking public input regarding the establishment of an additional regional office in the southeast region and four new community outreach offices as authorized by the Unleashing American Innovators Act of 2022 (UAIA), which was signed into law as part of the Consolidated Appropriations Act, 2023 in December 2022.

The law supports the agency’s goal of enhanced outreach by establishing the new Southeast Regional Office within three years, serving the states of Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Florida, Tennessee, Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, and Arkansas. Today’s RFC requests feedback from stakeholders on potential locations and the planning and design of these offices to help inform decision-making in this area.
