Tanya Bryant and daughters at Thanksgiving

Tanya Bryant, along with her two daughters and the help of USPTO educational resources and pro bono legal assistance, turned an idea brainstormed at the dinner table into a business with a patent and registered trademark.

Second act

In 2016, after three decades as a dedicated project manager guiding new initiatives from concept to execution, Tanya Bryant retired. Along with her work, she left behind a demanding routine of juggling multiple details on a daily basis. The transition to a slower pace wasn't easy for her, and it left a bit of a void.

Top three helpful tips for filing patent applications as you move to DOCX format

As we announced last May, as part of the USPTO’s ongoing initiatives to use the most advanced technology and to issue and maintain robust and reliable patents, the USPTO is moving to DOCX. DOCX is key to the USPTO’s application readiness initiatives, which in the future will provide quick and reliable feedback to applicants to correct their applications before they hit the examiner’s desk so that examiners can spend more time working with applicants to identify subject matter for protection.

Vaishali Udupa the next commissioner for patents

Vaishali Udupa, an intellectual property attorney, engineer, and currently a top executive from Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE), will join the United States Patent and Trademark Office as the new Commissioner for Patents effective January 17, 2023.

Vaishali Udupa to join USPTO as new Commissioner for Patents

Under Secretary of Commerce for Intellectual Property (IP) and Director of the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) Kathi Vidal announced today that Vaishali Udupa, an intellectual property attorney, engineer, and currently a top executive from Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE), will join the 13,000-person Department of Commerce agency as the new Commissioner for Patents effective January 17, 2023.

IP office heads pledge cooperation to promote innovation and combat counterfeiting and piracy

The heads of the intellectual property (IP) offices of the Group of Seven (G7) countries, along with the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), met virtually to discuss international cooperation on IP. In a Joint Statement issued after their meeting, the leaders agreed to cooperate on raising awareness about the important role that IP plays in global efforts to address societal challenges—such as public health, climate change, and sustainable development—and pledged to cooperate on establishing shared approaches to fight counterfeiting and piracy.
