Youth inventor Damian Earley

Inspired by an invention education assembly at school in second grade, Damian Earley spent the next several years creating various contraptions and competing in invention competitions on the local, state, and national level.

It was a blustery fall day in Columbus, Ohio in 2018 when then-12-year-old Damian Earley was taking his dog, Jagger, a boxer, out for his daily constitutional in their Clintonville neighborhood when he observed several trash cans had overturned in the wind, spilling the landfill-destined, single-use plastic containers, fast food wrappers, and other garbage into the narrow urban streets and alleyways of his neighborhood.

One year of bringing innovation to impact

As a young girl, I went with my father to a garage sale and came home with an oscilloscope—I had always tinkered and experimented and was fascinated with the ability to measure and see signals that were not perceptible to the human eye. My love for science and engineering continued as I worked on military aircraft during and after college as one of two women in GE’s Edison Engineering Program. I transitioned to intellectual property (IP) law after seeing first-hand the way IP, including patents, trademarks, and copyrights, inspired innovation and transformed and grew companies. IP allowed me to combine my thirst for knowledge of all things scientific and technical and my love of innovation with my business and startup interests.

Don’t miss it! Join us for World Intellectual Property Day

Every year on April 26, we join intellectual property (IP) organizations from across the globe to celebrate World Intellectual Property (IP) Day. This year’s theme is “Women and IP: Accelerating innovation and creativity.” Getting everyone off the bench to fully participate in innovation is not only a national imperative, but an international one. We have some exciting events planned this week — both in-person and virtual — to uplift the women inventors, creators, and entrepreneurs who do ground-breaking work every day. All are welcome!

Record number of law firms boost participation in innovation economy among under-resourced inventors and small businesses

The U. S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) today announced the recipients of the 2022 Patent Pro Bono Achievement Certificate, celebrating individuals and law firms that have volunteered significant time and effort to help financially under-resourced inventors and small businesses protect their ideas, positioning them to more fully realize their ideas and dreams.

USPTO announces new Trademarks for Humanity awards competition

The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) today announced its new Trademarks for Humanity awards program to recognize brand owners who are harnessing the power of trademarks to help solve humanitarian challenges. While future iterations will cover different challenges, the inaugural award cycle will focus on the environment, recognizing brand owners who improve the environment through their products and services.
