Extension of deadline for public comments and new dates for public roundtables for USPTO–U.S. Copyright Office joint study on IP and NFTs

The deadline for submission of public comments on a United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) and U.S. Copyright Office joint study to consider intellectual property (IP) law and policy issues associated with non-fungible tokens (NFTs) has been extended to February 3, 2023. Full details are available in a recently published Federal Register Notice (FRN).

The FRN also announces changes to the dates of the three public virtual roundtables associated with the study. The roundtables will now be held January 24 (on trademarks and NFTs), January 26 (on patents and NFTs), and January 31, 2023 (on copyright and NFTs).

This joint study is being conducted pursuant to the two agencies’ ongoing work to analyze the impacts of NFTs on IP rights, law, and policy pursuant to a request from the Senate Judiciary Subcommittee on IP. The FRN seeks public input from all interested parties to inform the study, including those from the creative, IP and technology industries, and academia.

More information about the joint study and the public roundtables is available on the USPTO website.
