Commerce Department seeks nominations for National Artificial Intelligence Advisory Committee   

The U.S. Department of Commerce recently published a Federal Register Notice (FRN) requesting nominations to serve on the National Artificial Intelligence Advisory Committee (NAIAC).   

The National Artificial Intelligence Initiative Act of 2020 calls for the establishment of the NAIAC. Committee members will have the unique opportunity to advise and make recommendations to the President and the National Artificial Intelligence Initiative Office on matters such as the state of U.S. competitiveness and leadership in AI, as well as opportunities for international cooperation with strategic allies on globally important AI issues. Accordingly, the call for nominations seeks expert leaders from a broad range of AI-relevant disciplines from across academia, industry, non-profits and civil society, and federal laboratories, including those from underrepresented communities.  

“As intellectual property is a bedrock of innovation, our stakeholders in the intellectual property community are uniquely positioned to offer valuable perspectives on areas such as science and technology research and development, technology transfer, commercial application, and economic competitiveness, related to artificial intelligence,” said Drew Hirshfeld, performing the functions and duties of the Under Secretary of Commerce for Intellectual Property and Director of the USPTO.

For those qualified to provide advice and information in these areas (as well as any other areas identified in the FRN), the USPTO encourages submitting a self or third-party nomination to serve on the National Artificial Intelligence Advisory Committee.

Nominations will be accepted until October 25 at 5 p.m. ET.
