Tiny particles make a big impact

Since she was a child, Sangeeta Bhatia has enjoyed figuring out how things work. Now a biomedical researcher, MIT professor, and biotech entrepreneur, she has invented human microlivers to study drug metabolism and liver disease as well as nanoparticles that help diagnose, study, and treat ailments like cancer. She is also a mentor, helping her students understand the importance of protecting their own intellectual property.

Fall 2020 brings exciting changes to the Patents organization

It has been our privilege to lead a continuous effort that empowers “America’s innovation agency” to better meet the demands of a rapidly changing world. Improved collaboration is critical to that effort, particularly within our Patents organization, which is why we recently reorganized our senior Patents management team. Among the benefits of the new, improved management structure is a work culture that encourages, debates, and embraces new ideas—ideas that will allow us to more nimbly serve our stakeholders and employees.

USPTO announces COVID-19 provisional patent application pilot program

The United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) today announced a collaborative deferred-fee provisional patent application pilot program for inventions that combat COVID-19.

Since the founding of this great nation, innovation has been the driving force of our economy and our most defining trait as a people. It is no coincidence that the only time the word “right” is mentioned in the Constitution, before the amendments that came later, is with respect to intellectual property rights. This concept was that important to our Founders.

Remarks by Director Iancu at the Intellectual Property Owners Association's 2020 Virtual Annual Meeting

I hope you are staying safe and healthy. Even in these difficult times, the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) is running smoothly. Before the pandemic, 56% of USPTO employees worked from home full time, and another 31% worked from home at least one day a week. Our popular telework program made us uniquely well-positioned to pivot to full-time telework for all employees with little difficulty.
