Hello. This is Andrei Iancu, Director of the USPTO. Innovation deserves celebration. It empowers. It improves. It inspires. And it will ultimately lead us out of the current crisis we are facing, and beyond. And it is intellectual property that incentivizes and protects that innovation. ? While we can’t physically gather together today, centuries of innovation and progress have nevertheless enabled us to commemorate World IP Day—together—in this new, exciting way. I can think of no better way to celebrate World IP Day 2020 than to hear directly from inventors using intellectual property to improve our lives. Happy World IP Day. Hi, my name is Emily Woods, co-founder of Sanivation. We invented a technology that converts human waste into sustainable fuel, and through Patents for Humanity, we were able to secure a patent that helps us gain credibility with our partners, enabling us to serve more people. So, happy IP Day. Greetings, my name is Tim Hebrink, and I work for 3M Company. It’s a pleasure to speak with you today on World IP Day. We have hundreds of patents on polymer film technologies that conserve energy in electronic displays and provide solar energy management for buildings, automobiles, photovoltaics, and solar thermal systems. We estimate that these patented technologies have reduced greenhouse gas emissions by at least 30 megatons and will continue to do so into the future. I’m Paul Clem at Sandia National Laboratories. We received a patent in 2018 on window coatings that change from being infrared-transmitting when they’re cold to infrared-reflecting when they’re hot. The initial patent helped us get investment through a cooperative R&D agreement, and then later on investment from ARPA-E [Advanced Research Projects Agency-Energy] to scale up the company and work with major window manufacturers. So, I just wanted to wish you a happy World IP Day and best of luck on your invention. Hello. My name is Elie Track, and I am the CEO of nVizix, a company developing advanced solar cells that have twice the efficiency of the state of the art at half the cost. We have a patent pending for our invention and additional patent applications in preparation, because ensuring ownership of our intellectual property is the key factor in obtaining the needed funds for full development and deployment of our technology for the benefit of humanity. Happy World IP Day. Hi, I’m Ray Kerins, Senior Vice President of Corporate Affairs at Bayer. Innovation is one of the most important things we can offer in this great land of ours and around the globe, to help us live healthier, happier lives. What’s also important is intellectual property protection. Without those proper protections, researchers and innovators won’t invest in the next wave of the future and what’s to come to help us live those happier and healthier lives. So, to all those innovators out there who are creating, thank you. And to all those out there who help ensure that we have proper intellectual property protections, I also say thank you. Sustainability matters to Oracle. We are committed to building a resilient future for our planet, for humanity, and for future generations. I wish you good health, and happy World IP Day.
