Last week the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) hosted a two-day “exploratory meeting” to discuss the future of substantive patent law harmonization. Representatives from Europe, Japan, Canada and Australia attended.

Leading the discussions for the USPTO, Under Secretary of Commerce for Intellectual Property Jon Dudas successfully brought together interested parties for the purpose of establishing an effective work plan for achieving progress on substantive patent law harmonization. The participants representing 22 countries along with the European Patent Office and the European Commission unanimously adopted a “Statement of Intent," which outlines a framework for future discussions.
