Madrid e-Filing is a secure filing system run by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO). Through Madrid e-Filing, you can file applications for international trademark registrations based on U.S. applications or registrations, which the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) and WIPO then process. You can directly communicate with the USPTO through the system and respond to any deficiencies identified by the USPTO in the international application or irregularity notices that WIPO's International Bureau (IB) might issue.
You need a WIPO Account to use Madrid e-Filing.
FILING TIP: Use the same email address for your WIPO Account and your Madrid e-Filing application
Using the same email address connects everything to your personal eMadrid workbench. From there, you can track status, access documents, manage payments, receive notifications, collaborate with colleagues or representatives, and manage your registration. You can also use it to handle renewals, name or address changes, ownership changes, limitations, and subsequent designations. WIPO systems are separate from USPTO systems, so you can choose whether to use the same email address for WIPO services as you do for your USPTO.gov account.
Payments and fees
The international trademark application fee and certification fee amounts will stay the same. However, when you file your international application with the Madrid e-Filing system, you will pay WIPO directly in Swiss francs instead of paying the USPTO in U.S. dollars. You may want to use a payment method that reduces or eliminates foreign transaction fees for international filings. Explore payment methods.

- More payment options, such as Current Account at WIPO, debit cards, Apple Pay, Google Pay, Samsung Pay, Alipay, and PayPal
- Eliminating the Pay.gov system's $24,999.99 daily limit for credit cards

Why we’re moving to Madrid e-Filing
Madrid e-Filing offers several benefits:
- Easier communication: USPTO staff may send informal messages about issues you can correct in the international application. You’ll also be able to respond more easily to irregularity notices from the IB. Similarly, communications between the USPTO and IB will be faster.
- Fewer delays: If time allows, you will have the chance to correct your international trademark application, if necessary, before certification is denied. This may help reduce certification denials and the need to file a Petition to Director.
- Simpler filing: Madrid e-Filing can automatically carry over key information from multiple USPTO trademark applications or registrations, which can save time and reduce errors.
- Timely updates: WIPO regularly updates Madrid e-Filing to incorporate changes to the Madrid regulations by the earliest effective date.
What you need to do to file
Now through September 30
You may file in either Madrid e‑Filing or TEASi.
If you use Madrid e‑Filing:
- You must log in to your WIPO Account or create an account to file.
- Your trademark application will be processed in the new system.
If you use TEASi, follow the current process from start to finish in TEASi.
Beginning October 1
File all new outbound applications and any responses to irregularity notices that follow in Madrid e‑Filing, unless exempted.
Applications already filed in TEASi must be completed in TEASi after October 1.
If you aren’t sure which filing system you used, check your filing receipt.
You can file a subsequent designation directly with the IB, or through TEASi for a fee.
FILING TIPs
Some of the terms in Madrid e-Filing are different from the terms used in U.S. basic applications and registrations. Review the Madrid e-Filing terms for the closest USPTO terms, if they exist.
WIPO and the USPTO are working to fix these issues:
Importing trademark
For now, you cannot use a registration number to import USPTO filing data. Instead, use the application serial number. If needed, you can use your registration number to find the application serial number in the Trademark Status and Document Retrieval system.
Certification marks
There is a known issue with the goods and services information for certification marks in U.S. classes A and B. If you’re filing an international application that includes a certification mark as one of the basic applications or registrations, you must manually enter the goods and services information and choose the correct international class. To help avoid errors, copy and paste the goods or services directly from TSDR whenever possible.
