At this event, the USPTO officially launched the PatentsView Community Site, updated data visualization with export functionality, and new data fields that can be accessed across PatentsView tools. This year’s updates were based on feedback gathered by the user community at the 2016 PatentsView workshop. The new community site includes a moderated forum for user inquiries and a Data in Action page for sharing analyses, visualizations, and publications.

The theme of the workshop was “New Tools for Open Patent Data.” The USPTO officially launched a new PatentsView data query builder at the workshop. This query builder allows users to easily request and download subsets of PatentsView data. The PatentsView database incorporates the new inventor disambiguation algorithm developed at the 2015 workshop by Nicholas Monath and colleagues at UMass Amherst. The USPTO enlisted the public’s help to leverage our intellectual property data, often an early indicator of meaningful research and development, and combine it with other economic and funding data. Participants in the challenge had the opportunity to leverage USPTO Cancer Moonshot patent data to reveal new insights into investments around cancer therapy research and treatments.
