Trademark Madrid Protocol: Update and Tips for Users

The Silicon Valley USPTO will host two lectures about the Madrid Protocol on June 22, 2016.  The Madrid Protocol is an international agreement administered by the World Intellectual Property Office (WIPO) to facilitate the filing and maintenance of trademark registrations in multiple countries. 

Update on the Use of the Madrid Protocol in the United States by Alan Datri, WIPO Consultant.  In his talk, Mr. Datri will also discuss recent, pending and proposed changes to the international procedure and recent improvements in WIPO’s E-Services, including the release of a beta version of the Madrid Monitor Search Tool.

Tips on Filing Madrid International Applications at the USPTO by Attiya Malik, USPTO Trademark Attorney.  Ms. Malik will highlight pitfalls commonly made during the filing process and best practices for using the Madrid Protocol.

The event will provide opportunities for questions and answers, private follow-up with the speakers and networking with fellow attendees.

Attendees should have at least a basic knowledge of trademark prosecution.  This event is intended for IP attorneys, paralegals, and practitioners who use or would like to know more about the Madrid Protocol.

About Our Speakers:

Mr. Alan Datri is a consultant to WIPO who has been tasked with obtaining feedback from U.S. trademark owners regarding any questions or concerns they may have about any aspect of the international procedure or its administration by the International Bureau in Geneva.  Mr. Datri spent the first part of his career at the USPTO and then worked for many years at WIPO.

Ms. Attiya Malik is a staff attorney in the Office of the Commissioner for Trademarks at the USPTO.  Ms. Malik handles legal policy issues related to Madrid Protocol filings at the USPTO and is a frequent speaker on Madrid practice and procedure.
