In 2012, the Department of Commerce partnered with Cornell Tech University to establish a United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) presence in New York City. This first-of-its-kind partnership installed a USPTO engagement and outreach coordinator on the campus of Cornell Tech University, on Roosevelt Island, to provide students and local inventors and entrepreneurs with access to USPTO information and education. The engagement coordinator conducted regular workshops and talks on the patent process and connected both prospective and in-process patent applicants with resources and guidance. The partnership ended in 2016.
