Stefanos Karmis

Acting Deputy Commissioner for Patents

Stefanos Karmis is currently serving as an acting Deputy Commissioner for Patents. In this role, Mr. Karmis provides executive oversight for the Office of Patents Legal Administration, the Office of Petitions, the Office of Patent Quality Assurance, the Manual of Patent Examining Procedure staff, the Central Reexamination Unit, and Technology Center 2900, which handles the examination of designs.

Prior to this role, Mr. Karmis served as the Acting Deputy Chief Policy Officer for Patents and Innovation in the USPTO’s Office of Policy and International Affairs as well as an Acting Deputy Commissioner for Patens with oversight for the divisions in the Office of International Patent Cooperation and Technology Centers 2600 and 3700. 

Mr. Karmis has also served as Director of the Office of International Patent Legal Administration, Director of the Office of Patent Quality Assurance and as a Senior Advisor to multiple Deputy Commissioners.  He started his career at the USPTO in 2002 as a patent examiner in business methods technology. 

Mr. Karmis has a bachelor’s degree in industrial and systems engineering from Virginia Tech and a law degree from The Catholic University of America Columbus School of Law.
