The Office of Patent Training (OPT) is committed to increasing the knowledge, ability, and skills of our patent employees and to delivering intellectual property information and education to our external stakeholders. Our comprehensive training programs enhance awareness of examination practice and procedures.
OPT aids in the development and delivery of training for both newly hired patent examiners and experienced patent examiners. These training materials are available to the public. Our Stakeholder Training on Examination Practice and Procedure program offers stakeholders opportunities to gain a better understanding of the patent examination process. Virtual Instructor Led Training (vILT) provides a vehicle by which recently delivered examination training is shared with the external stakeholders in an interactive online format allowing participants to remotely attend the training without the need to travel to USPTO locations.
The Patent Examiner Technical Training Program offers technology experts from industry and academia an opportunity to voluntarily provide technical training and expertise to patent examiners in-person or virtually from their own location. Organizations located within the continental U.S. have the opportunity to voluntarily host patent examiners for technical site visits through the Site Experience Education (SEE) Program. USPTO funds all SEE travel costs for patent examiner visits to host organizations.
