The Refund Branch functions as the receiving office for most refund requests. The branch is responsible for coordinating and providing status of refund requests, and for answering customer inquiries about refunds. Generally, the refund requests are forwarded to a number of different program offices (based on the fee code) for processing. Note: Requests for express abandonments to obtain a refund should be filed as instructed on form PTO/AIA/24B.

Refund requests must be made by the original fee submitter and should include the following: reference number (e.g., application number), original payment date, fee amount(s), fee code(s), and a brief explanation of why a refund is due. Provide any supporting documentation with the request.
