World IP Day 2018 - Capitol Hill

 Dr. Cherry Murray, Benjamin Peirce Professor of Technology and Public Policy in the John A. Paulson School of Engineering and Applied Sciences and Professor of Physics, Harvard University, has made research accomplishments in the areas of light scattering, soft condensed matter physics, surface physics and nanostructures.

Cherry Murray served as the Director of the United States Department of Energy’s Office of Science, overseeing the areas of advanced scientific computing, basic energy sciences, biological and environmental sciences, fusion energy sciences, high energy physics, and nuclear physics, and the management of 10 national laboratories. She was dean of Harvard University’s School of Engineering and Applied Sciences and Principal Associate Director for Science and Technology at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. Prior to that, Dr. Murray held a number of positions, retiring as Senior Vice President of Physical and Wireless Research, at Bell Laboratories, Lucent Technologies, formerly AT&T Bell Laboratories and previously Bell Telephone Laboratories, Inc. 

She earned both B.S. and Ph.D. degrees in physics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. She was awarded the George E. Pake Prize of the American Physical Society and the National Medal of Technology and Innovation.

 Dr. Irina Buhimschi is the Director of the Center for Perinatal Research in the Research Institute at Nationwide Children’s Hospital and Professor of Pediatrics and Obstetrics/Gynecology at The Ohio State University in Columbus Ohio.

Dr. Buhimschi's research spans the broad area of understanding the molecular and pathophysiologic mechanisms of preterm labor and preeclampsia that together account for the large majority of preterm births, stillbirths, and neonatal deaths. The practical application of her research has led to the Congo Red Dot test, a device that is under development as an aid for diagnosis of preeclampsia in the United States and worldwide. The Congo Red Dot test was one of the 2016 USPTO Patents for Humanity award winners.

Dr. Irina Buhimschi received her M.D. degree from the Carol Davila University of Medicine and Pharmacy in Bucharest Romania and postgraduate and postdoctoral training at The University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston, Texas and University of Maryland School of Medicine in Baltimore, Maryland.

 Danya Sherman is an entrepreneur passionate about combining human rights and technology innovation to create lasting, sustainable, social change. She is inventor of the KnoNap, a beverage napkin that acts like a generic napkin but can also detect the presence of more than two dozen dangerous drugs in a beverage.

Prior to KnoNap, Sherman worked on Capitol Hill and in NGOs addressing women’s issues and human rights. Sherman has been awarded Washington Life's 2017 Tech 25 Innovators and Disruptors, Toyota's 2018 Mother of Invention, and Entrepreneur's Organization Global Student Entrepreneur Awards Finalist. She is a student at George Washington University.
