| 1. A method of forming an optical fiber precursor, comprising:
providing a silica glass member;
depositing additional glass onto the silica glass member to form an optical fiber precursor, wherein the silica glass member
and the additional glass are essentially chlorine free;
heating an alkali metal material to form an alkali metal vapor;
exposing the optical fiber precursor to the alkali metal vapor, wherein the alkali metal vapor diffuses through a diffusion
surface of the optical fiber precursor to a diffusion depth of at least about 100 μm; and
etching the diffusion surface to a depth of at least about 5% of the diffusion depth.
