1. A method for the prophylaxis of an orthomyxovirus or paramyxovirus infection comprising the step of administration to a subject in need thereof of an effective amount of a compound of formula (I)

R2 is acetyl or trifluoroacetyl;
X is CONH, NHCO or O;
n is an integer from 2 to 6; and
Y is C2-C8 alkyl, C3-C8 cycloalkyl, C1-C4 alkoxyalkyl, an amino acid or dipeptide,
or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt, ether, ester or salt of such ester thereof,
with the proviso that when R is a guanidino group, R2 is acetyl, X is O and n is 2, then Y is not C2 alkyl.
