1. A sensor control unit, comprising:
a housing adapted for placement on skin and adapted to receive a portion of an electrochemical sensor extending out of the skin having a plurality of contacts;
a plurality of conductive contacts disposed on the housing and configured for coupling to the plurality of contacts on the electrochemical sensor; and
an rf transmitter disposed in the housing and coupled to the plurality of conductive contacts for transmitting data obtained using the electrochemical sensor,
wherein the electrochemical sensor comprises:
a working electrode;
a counter electrode;
an enzyme disposed proximate to the working electrode; and
a complex disposed proximate to the working electrode, the complex having the formula:

wherein c is a negative, neutral, or positive charge represented by −1 to −5, 0, or +1 to +5, inclusive, respectively;
M is osmium;
L1 has the formula:

wherein R7 is a substituted or unsubstituted aryl or a substituted or unsubstituted C1-C12 alkyl;
R8 is —H or Cl alkyl; and
a combination of R9 and R10 forms a fused, saturated or unsaturated, 5- or 6-membered ring;
L2 is a halide; and
L and L′ are independently:

wherein R′1 is a substituted or an unsubstituted C1-C6 alkyl;
R′3 and R′4 are independently —H; and Ra, Rb, Rc, and Rd are independently —H or Cl alkyl;
wherein said complex is coupled to a polymeric backbone through one or more of L, L′, L1 and L2.
