1. An internal portion of a medical device, comprising:
an internal coil configured to receive processed signals from an external portion of the medical device, wherein the external portion is configured to be worn on a head of a recipient;
output electronics configured to stimulate the recipient of the internal portion based on the processed signals received from the external portion;
at least one implantable detector configured to detect sounds from within the recipient;
at least one capacitor configured to provide sufficient power for operation of the internal portion for a period of time independent from the external portion;
one or more sensors configured to detect the external portion based on one or more predetermined input signals; and
one or more processors configured to determine that the external portion is unavailable based on the one or more sensors determining the absence of one or more predetermined input signals from the external portion for a predetermined period of time,
wherein the output electronics are configured to stimulate the recipient based on the sounds detected from within the recipient by the at least one implantable detector when the external portion is unavailable.
