1. A medical instrument assembly comprising:
a catheter comprising an elongate flexible shaft having a proximal end portion comprising a port, an opposite distal end portion terminating in a tip, and a working channel extending from the port to an exit adjacent to the tip;
a medical device assembly at least a portion of which is adapted to be inserted into the working channel of the catheter, the medical device assembly comprising:
a handle assembly having a first end and a second end, the handle assembly comprising a first handle portion adjacent to the first end and a second handle portion adjacent to the second end, wherein the second handle portion is slidably engaged with the first handle portion, the first handle portion and the second handle portion each comprise a groove;
a first electromagnetic sensor adapted to be releasably retained in the groove of the first handle portion of the medical device assembly, and a second electromagnetic sensor adapted to be releasably retained in the groove of the second handle portion of the medical device assembly;
a needle, the needle having a proximal end and a distal end and defining a lumen that extends from the proximal end to the distal end, wherein the proximal end is mechanically coupled to the second handle portion and wherein a translation of the second handle portion with respect to the first handle portion causes a movement of the medical instrument, the movement corresponding to an extension of the distal end of the needle from the tip;
a medical instrument, the medical instrument being positioned within the lumen for advancement therethrough; and
a navigation system, the navigation system comprising:
a processor, the processor adapted to determine the extension of the distal end of the needle relative to the tip by calculating the distance between the first electromagnetic sensor and the second electromagnetic sensor based on the first position of the first electromagnetic sensor and the second position of the second electromagnetic sensor;
an electromagnetic field generator for inducing the voltage in the first electromagnetic sensor and the second electromagnetic sensor, the voltage being an output,
a localization device for measuring the voltages induced into the first and second electromagnetic sensors and translating the measured voltages into the first and second positions, and
a display for displaying a representation of the determined amount of movement of the needle.
