1. A particulate composite material comprising a nano- SiOX/graphite composite particle comprising a graphitic core particle associated with SiOx nanoparticles, wherein X is between 0.2 and 1.8, and wherein the nano-SiOx/ graphite composite particle is coated by a layer of non-graphitic carbon;
wherein the non-graphitic carbon layer is pyrolytic carbon;
wherein the SiOx nanoparticles are characterized by a particle size distribution (PSD) with a D50 of 15 to 100 nm; and
wherein the SiOx nanoparticles are associated with the surface of the graphitic core particle.
