15. A method comprising:
providing a blood pump comprising:
an axial shaft,
an impeller disposed on the axial shaft,
a frame disposed around the impeller, and
a drive cable extending from outside the subject's body to the axial shaft, the drive cable being held in a preloaded state with respect to the frame;
placing the blood pump into a body of a subject; and
driving the impeller to pump blood from a distal end of the impeller to a proximal end of the impeller by imparting rotational motion to the impeller via the drive cable, the preloaded state of the drive cable being such that initiation of pumping of blood by rotation of the impeller does not cause the drive cable to axially elongate relative to a length of the drive cable prior to initiation of the rotation of the impeller.
