1. An optical spectroscopy apparatus for measurement of species concentration, number density, or column density, said apparatus comprising:
a laser light source;
a single fixed length optical path receiving light from said source and containing a gaseous species to be detected;
a detector receiving light at an end of said path; and
signal processing electronics connected to said detector; and
wherein said apparatus has a plurality of operational modes measuring a same absorption feature of the species and wherein said apparatus switches between modes depending on measured absorbance.
