1. A method for accessing a base station performed at a mobile station in a communication system, comprising:
selecting a signature sequence from a plurality of signature sequences;
transmitting an access request utilizing the selected signature sequence from the mobile station;
determining if a channel assignment message, which is responsive to the access request and is modulated with at least one of the selected signature sequence or a signature associated with the selected signature, is received from the base station; and
transmitting another access request, if the channel assignment message is determined as not being received.
