1. An isolated nucleic acid comprising a nucleotide sequence which encodes a polypeptide which elongates α-linolenic acid (C18:3 d9, 12, 15) by at least two carbon atoms whereas γ-linolenic acid (C18:3 d6, 9, 12) is not elongated, selected from the group consisting of:
a) the nucleic acid sequence of SEQ ID NO: 1;
b) a nucleic acid sequence which encodes the polypeptide of SEQ ID NO: 2; and
c) a derivative of the nucleic acid sequence of SEQ ID NO: 1, which encodes a polypeptide having at least 95% homology with the nucleic acid sequence encoding the amino acid sequence of SEQ ID NO: 2.
